What Is a First Contact Physiotherapist?
If you have visited your GP practice in Liverpool or anywhere across the NHS recently with a muscle, joint, or bone problem, you may have been offered an appointment with a First Contact Physiotherapist, or FCP. But what exactly does this role involve, and why is it good news for patients?
The FCP Role Explained
A First Contact Physiotherapist is an experienced, advanced-practice physiotherapist who works within GP surgeries as part of the primary care team. Instead of seeing a GP first for a musculoskeletal (MSK) complaint such as back pain, a frozen shoulder, or knee problems, patients can go directly to an FCP for assessment, diagnosis, and management.
FCPs are trained to the same diagnostic standard as GPs for MSK conditions. They can request imaging such as X-rays and MRI scans, refer to orthopaedic consultants, and prescribe exercise-based treatment plans, all without needing a GP appointment first.
Why Was the FCP Role Created?
Musculoskeletal conditions account for roughly one in five GP appointments across England. By allowing specialist physiotherapists to manage these cases directly, the NHS can ensure patients see the right clinician first time, freeing up GP appointments for other medical needs.
The role was developed by NHS England and Health Education England, with FCPs now embedded in primary care networks across Liverpool, Merseyside, and the wider North West.
How Patients Benefit
Seeing a First Contact Physiotherapist offers several advantages for patients in Liverpool and the surrounding areas:
- Faster access - You can often get an FCP appointment sooner than a standard GP appointment for MSK issues.
- Specialist expertise - FCPs have advanced training specifically in muscles, joints, and bones, meaning you see someone with deep knowledge of your condition from the start.
- Better outcomes - Research shows that early physiotherapy input leads to faster recovery, less reliance on medication, and fewer unnecessary referrals.
- Continuity of care - Many FCPs can manage your condition from start to finish within the GP practice, including follow-up appointments and onward referral if needed.
How FCP Experience Informs Private Practice
My experience working as an FCP across practices in Liverpool and Merseyside has directly shaped the way I deliver private physiotherapy. Having assessed and managed thousands of patients as a first point of contact, I bring the same thorough, evidence-based diagnostic approach to every private consultation.
Whether you book an online video consultation or a home visit anywhere across Liverpool and Merseyside, you receive the same standard of advanced MSK assessment that is delivered within the NHS, combined with the flexibility and personalised attention that private practice allows.
This means accurate diagnosis, clear explanation of your condition, and a tailored rehabilitation plan from your very first appointment, no GP referral needed.
